Why Solo RPG Day Exists

A note about discovering a remarkable hobby.

Most solo roleplayers remember discovering the hobby for the first time.

Maybe it was a journaling game.

Maybe it was an oracle sitting beside a favorite tabletop RPG.

Maybe it was a gamebook.

Or perhaps you simply found yourself wondering,

“Can I play this by myself?”

However it happened…

a whole new world quietly opened.

The deeper we explored that world, the more surprised we became.

Solo roleplaying wasn’t one corner of the tabletop hobby.

It was many.

There were solo journaling games.

Traditional tabletop RPGs played with oracles.

Gamebooks.

Map-making games.

World-building games.

A remarkable variety of games, ideas, and ways to play.

It was far larger—and far more creative—than we ever imagined.

One thing stood out almost immediately.

Much of this hobby is built by independent creators.

People creating thoughtful, imaginative games from spare bedrooms, home offices, and around their own kitchen tables.

Many of those games deserve to be discovered by far more people than ever find them.

That simple realization eventually became Solo RPG Day.

Not because the hobby needed another event.

But because we believed it deserved another opportunity to be discovered.

Every October 1, people around the world take a little time to celebrate solo roleplaying.

Some begin a new campaign.

Some finish one.

Some share a photograph of their table.

Some introduce a friend to solo gaming.

Some discover a creator they’ve never heard of before.

Some discover that solo roleplaying is something they might love.

Every celebration looks a little different.

Every discovery matters.

Solo RPG Day isn’t really about one day.

It’s about helping more people discover a hobby that has brought so many of us imagination, creativity, friendship, and quiet joy.

If, years from now, October 1 quietly becomes the day someone discovers their first solo RPG…

their favorite creator…

or simply decides to roll a few dice…

then Solo RPG Day has become exactly what we hoped it would be.
